Like the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven, the vital landmark was built at the behest of the Yongle Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. As such, the temple bell dates back to the early 15th century and a period of momentous change in Beijing. The Great Bell itself weighs over 42,000 kg and measures close to 7 metres in height. The most notable feature of the massive bell however, is the fact that people up to 15 km away can hear its resonant ring.
Vitals and Tips
Built in 1985, the Ancient Bell Museum contains scores of valuable artefacts and objects.
While the Great Bell hails from the Ming Dynasty, the temple structure itself dates back to the Qing Dynasty and the year 1733.
The Great Bell Temple is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Visitors must pay a small admission fee and tours last for approximately one hour. The temple is a short walk from Dazhongsi Station on Beijing Subway Line 3.
