Fragrant Hills Park is replete with smoke trees, persimmon trees, maple trees and pine-cypress forests. Although periods of unrest and foreign invasion wrought havoc and damage within the park, Fragrant Hills is one of the most desirable points of recreation, respite and serenity in metropolitan Beijing. In late autumn, the park’s vivid foliage lures scores of daily visitors. Fine landmarks within Fragrant Hills Park include Spectacles Lake, Bright Temple, Tranquillity Green Lake and Incense Burner Peak. The park’s Shuangqing Villa is the former home of Communist Party Chairman Mao Tse-tung.
