The prominent Beijing point of interest covers 10,000 m2 and operates as a museum, in co-operation with the excellent Beijing Planetarium, some 12 km away. The observatory has many vital objects of interest, most notably a peerless collection of instruments that date back to the Qing Dynasty and Jesuit missionary and scholar Ferdinand Verbiest. The ancient observatory is a short walk southwest of Beijing’s principal transport hub of Jianguomen. Pre-eminent points of interest in the city like the Great Hall of the People, Tiananmen Square, National Museum, Palace Museum and Beihai Park are all within 5 km of the observatory.
Vitals and Tips
Jianguomen Station is the best way to reach Beijing Ancient Observatory. The museum is in the Dongcheng District of the city.
The observatory is open daily, except Monday and Tuesday, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Visitors must pay a small admission fee to enter the facility.
