When To Go

Salvador enjoys a mild tropical climate and has a distinct wet and dry season. The average temperatures are quite even and comfortable, about 25°C (77°F) most of the year, though it dips to around 22°C (72°F) in the winter months of July and August. Precipitation averages 120 mm (4.7 inches) most of the year except for between March and June when it can reach up to 300 mm (11.8 inches) per month. The peak season for tourism is in winter, particularly in January and February when Carnival celebrations take place. The prevailing southeast winds often bring thunderstorms but ensure a cool and temperate climate all year round.

Getting There

Salvador is serviced by Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport, which is situated some 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) north of the city. The airport hosts many carriers from Europe and the USA. Travel to the city is via either airport bus or taxi, or, if you do not mind driving in Brazil, book a rental car from the airport. There is a long-distance bus station downtown connecting many major cities, but if you are trying to get around Salvador city itself, the best way is to take a local bus or a taxi. The old city centre is small enough to see on foot but be sure to take the elevator between the upper and lower levels.
