Amazonas is a massive, formidable area to explore and the vast majority of the dense rainforest is inaccessible. At well over 1.5 million km², the state is about the size of Mongolia or Iran. Most tourists who touch down in Manaus use the city as a platform to embark on jungle treks and ecotours of the Amazon. As the home of ⅓ of all wildlife genera on the planet and a peerless array of rare biodiversity, rainforest forays rank as potential trips of a lifetime. Manaus is predictably full of tour operators who claim to offer just that but as always, caveat emptor. Happily, the busy river city is not without some notable points of interest. The best include the Museu de Ciencias Naturais da Amazônia, Teatro Amazonas and Museu do Seringal Vila Paraíso and Rio Negro Palace.
