Incredible Iguazu Falls
Love can be treacherous at the best of times. But when your ‘significant other’ is a god, you should probably try extra hard not to annoy them. Clearly legendary Latin American maiden Naipaí had more beauty than brains… ... Read more »
The story goes that the Iguazu Falls were created after Naipaí fled with her mortal lover in a canoe, angering the god who had planned to marry her and leading him to slice the river in half. Which means visitors have Naipaí to thank for this awesome explosion of water surrounded by a green, subtropical heaven in Brazil.
Follow the zigzag trail around Iguazu Falls to Salto Santa Maria, Deodoro, Floriano and the famous Garganta do Diablo (aka The Devil’s Throat). Then drop into Parque das Aves, a bird park with massive walk-through aviaries. Like Naipaí, there are some bird-brained beauties here, too!

IGUAZU FALLS EVENTS
The Carnival in Foz do Iguacu may be smaller than Rio’s, but it’s just as glittery, feathery and laden with g-strings – and that’s just the boys! Count backwards 40 days from Easter.
April’s Festival Internacional de Cine Independiente is a buzzing 10-day film showcase for independent international films.
May’s Cultural Fair boosts tourism by promoting cultural awareness. For visitors, this means shopping for handicrafts, kicking back at a concert or gorging on empanadas.
Brazil’s Independence Day on 7 September causes a ruckus all over the nation, and Foz do Iguacu is no exception. Expect plenty of alcohol and sequins.
WHEN TO GO
- Summer around the Iguazu Falls area is lush and warm, with temperatures averaging a toasty 30ºC (86ºF)
- While the winter days are pretty mild, night-time temperatures often dip below 10°C (50ºF)
- October equals rain. And we’re not just talking a light drizzle – it pours!
GETTING AROUND
- In some areas walking just isn’t feasible, but when you can, it’s the best way to explore.
- To venture beyond the falls, take a bus. They’re not the most modern means of transport, but they are cheap and (usually) reliable.
- This place has pretty shoddy roads and high accident rates, so avoid getting behind the wheel yourself.
