A bit of a faded glory - the dining room is magnificent, but why don't they light it properly! The receptionist was fairly new and badly trained. It took a while to sort out rooms that were a. non-smoking, and b. made up! Service in the bar and restaurant was almost as slow as watching paint dry. However - the food at dinner was very good, nicely-cooked and keenly-priced, the wine prices were reasonable, and the bacon and sausages at breakfast of outstanding quality. A great location if you want to see the city - a short walk from the railway station and 3 minutes stroll to the centre of town. Despite its faults I would stay there again.

the swallow king's arms hotel is ideal for those using public transport as both the rail and bus stations are only a few minutes walk away. my first impression of the hotel was that the outside needed a 'facelift' but once inside the decor was good, the staff are extremely efficient and helpful, the rooms (i booked a no-smoking one) are very pleasant and the self-service breakfast was excellent with a wide range to chose from.
