Best Western Monkbar Hotel York

Easy check-in, nice room but hot! Comfortable bar / lounge areas. A short wait for breakfast but efficiently handled. All in all I'd stay again, (this was our second short break there), not least because of the great location.

Friendly, helpful staff. Great location just on the edge of the old town. Walking distance to minster and shopping.

A quality hotel , however @ £70 per person per night well over priced for this location.

Absolutely ideal for access to Yorks' attractions (less than 5 minutes) and the added bonus of free parking

The hotel is situated within a short walk away from the main shopping area of York including the Minster and The Shambles area of York city centre. Hotel was easily navigated to using the post code in my Tom Tom and is perfectly convenient for leaving the car at the hotel and walking the short distance to the areas you most likely would wish to visit rather than driving in the heavy traffic and annoying one way system.

The bar was the alternative to the restaurant for food but had two huge TV screens blaring out football. Considered room service but the tray charge of £4 per person we felt was far too much so we suffered the football. Bedroom and bathroom were small and heating thermostat didn't work. Compared to other Best Western hotels we have stayed in we felt this was poor.

I have stayed at the Monkbar hotel on two occasions in the last 4 years, the first time the room was away from the road which was a quieter and preferred position. On both occasions the staff throughout were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was excellent and the position of the hotel is excellent for visiting central York. The carpark is a definite benefit.

The hotel is in an excellent position next to one of the gates through the ancient walls of York and therefore about a 5 minutes walk from the Minster and shops. It could not be better! The staff were lovely and we had a good breakfast there the next morning. The price is average for a hotel of that standard in York. The room was very clean and large but I was surprised to be put on the top floor in an Annex without a lift. I would have struggled if I had had a large suitcase but no doubt someone would have helped if I had but asked. There is also parking at the hotel which is a bonus although it fills up quickly. I just left my keys at Reception so they could move my car if needed. Parking in York is at a premium so I thought I did well finding a hotel with a car park.

5th time we've stayed here, easy access to The Minster and all of Yorks other delights. staff very helpfull, decent food. Unlucky with room this time as we where next to main road a bit noisy. But a great break.

Location, general interior design was good. There is a lovely enclosed courtyard with palms and giant ferns. It must be delightful to take tea out there, but the weather prevented us from doing so. It was disappointing to see washbasins with separate H and C taps instead of mixer taps - this is something many foreign tourists hold against British institutions, and it is puzzling why (and how!) people still use them in this day and age. Breakfast was reasonable, though nothing special. We dined in Bombay Spice, one of the many excellent ethnic restaurants in York, rather than stay in the hotel. The hotel is rather pricy, it is not clear why it is so much more expensive than its competitors.
