Beresford Arms Hotel San Francisco
3 out of 5

The Hotel is in a good location close to Union Square and 15 minutes walk to the Moscone Convention Center. The in room facility a poor, our party stayed in rooms 410 and 409, 410 been a "Junior Suite". While tea was supplied no means of boiling water was. Breakfast is very much pastry and muffins and the same every morning. Good Wine and cheese afternoons in the hall. The room are very well worn, in need of redecorating and a total refit. Please note we did inform reception of our concerns. Unless it is renovated I could not recommend this hotel.

An excellent stay, well run hotel. (As a note, your requirement that one MUST enter comments here is very aggravating and probably insures that I will never rate a hotel again.)

Our suites had two double beds and included a desk, bath with jacuzzi, bidet, and double sinks. Kitchen was included with a small table with two chairs. (full oven, microwave, refrigerator). One of our suites had two comfy chairs near the window with a coffee table in between, while the other had a table with two chairs. The neighborhood has nearby grocery and convenience stores along with restaurants. Two blocks away from a variety of car rental shops. One drawback was that the weekend evenings had club/bar music going to about midnight, and then rowdy crowds that go about 'til 1 a.m. This might be minimized by which side of the hotel you're on, but you might ask at the hotel desk. (this will probably mean trading a view for quiet) Breakfast with pastries, fruit, and good coffee and tea are matched with wine, cheese, and snacks at the end of the day. Large comfortable lounge on the first floor includes two computer stations with printing. Free wi-fi in rooms may be a little spotty, but it generally got the job done. They did provide a portable crib which appeared new and clean.

Pros: Nice staff, great location, very clean and the afternoon wine and cheese was a nice addition. Cons: Older building, thin walls, radiator noises.

Loved the hotel and would definitely stay at the Beresford again. Great location - 2 1/2 blocks from Union Square - close to the metro bus lines and cable car routes and china town. The continental breakfast had nice fresh fruit, muffins, pastries, etc. The staff was very helpful, kind, and accommodating. Great historic feel. We had a great time.

This is a great little hotel. Spacious room with kitchennette and huge bathroom. Wine and cheese tasting in the afternoon just great if you are around. All staff were very friendly and helpful, espically the conciearge who brought our bags in on our arrival he was fantastic and nothing was a problem! Great stop only block to union square and it a good part of town. For the prices I wouldn’t go past this hotel!!! Some rooms are under the street level, if you would like to look out maybe request a higher floor.

The architecture was timeless/classic with essential upgrades (modern bathroom). Morning breakfast was nice (muffin and melon). Location was perfect, just a few blocks from union square.

The hotel is located a few blocks from Union Square. If you are fit, it is an easy walk to the wharf, Nob Hill, China Town and AT&T Park. There are several restaurants very close by as well. The staff was very informative and helpful. The room was quaint but very comfortable. The longer we stayed in San Francisco, the more the city grew on us. The Beresford Arms aided in that enjoyment. The only issue was that valet parking is a little pricey but if you don't need a car the hotel's location is perfect.

Pros and cons to this hotel, but overall we would recommend it. Pros: location (5 minute walk from Union Square); very clean; good service/front desk reception friendly and helpful; free (but very modest) breakfast; basic (but pleasant) wine/cheese reception each evening; access to public transit including cable cars; dining options close by; free wifi in room. Cons: no air conditioning, and on rare hot SF nights rooms are very warm; rooms facing busy Post Street LOUD at all hours (and with windows open to get cool air...); soundproofing between rooms poor; neighbourhood (see below). In terms of the location, we give a mixed review - the area is adjacent to the Tenderloin district, considered one of the worst areas in SF HOWEVER the hotel area seemed safe. The area north is Nob Hill, very safe (and expensive), and to the east is the very busy/safe Union Square. West to Van Ness Street was sketchy, and south towards Market got progressively worse by the block and should be avoided (easily done by going east to Union Square and then north or south from there).

Overall, it was an okay hotel. The location is nice, it's near union square and fairly close to the BART. However, be careful where you walk, it's on the border of tenderloin. If you walk one way a few blocks it's very nice, but if you walk another way you are in the middle of tenderloin. One nice aspect was that the hotel did offer wine and cheese in the afternoon. Although, the wine was similar to charles shaw, but hey, free wine. There was a complimentary breakfast that consisted of fruit, danishes, muffins and coffee. Not bad, really. The room itself was basic, but it was clean and comfortable. I did like the Victorian style, but some parts of the hotel were not updated. We had a radiator that rattled and leaked when we turned it on. Fortunately, we didn't need it much because I don't think we would have been able to sleep if it was on. The walls were paper thin and we could hear our neighbors conversations. Also, the hotel room does not come with parking. They have a valet service for $24 a day. If you are already staying there it is definitely worth it because there are no parking garages cheaper for blocks. Just factor the extra $24 into the price when comparing hotels. I wouldn't mind staying there again when I go back to San Francisco, but I'll probably look for something better.

There is no self parking offered at the hotel. When you pull up to the curb IF there are not other cars at the curb, you can actually get out and unload your luggage. Then you give your keys to the front desk clerk so he can call the valet who is 20 minutes away to come get your car. So be prepared to wait 20-30 minutes when you are ready to leave to get your car back. The rooms are not newly decorated. I would say the last time the decor and bed coverings were changed was in the 1980's. I'm sure at one time this was a nice hotel, but for now I would compare it to a Super 8 or Motel 6. It was clean enough, but just the bare necessities.

I was generally pleased by the hotel for a business trip in the Union Square area. There was a combination of business men an tourists at the hotel. The hotel room was clean and pleasant for the extremely attractive price for similar hotels in the area. It was a little noisy at nice due to some activity in the neighborhood but I would use the hotel again for a trip to the area. The wine and cheese at the end of the day and the small but adequate continental breakfast were nice advantages to staying at this hotel.

Well presented rooms, friendly staff. Cheese, nibbles, and choice of red/white good quality hotel branded wine is offered of an afternoon and enables/encourages guests to mingle and exchange travel experiences. Very civilised and appreciated.

Very goog localization, walking distance to the Union Square. It`s an old hotel, but the room is big, and has breakfast included. Not so quiet....you can here the street noise..... but nothing that you can`t sleep. I would come back here because of the localization and price!

Very ordinary hotel. Hallway carpet was smelly, furnishings old, room small, no proper working shower head. Location very good for walking towards Union Square and the turnaround. Wine and cheese in the afternoon was a nice thought but not professionally presented

Hotel is well located and breakfast provided is basic continental but nonetheless sufficient. Serrvice was excellent and hotel was old but clean and friendly. Due to hotel age hotel is quite noisy and pipes often disturb you. Pipes are very load at 5:30am for about 10 minutes so expect to be woken!!! I would recommend the hotel for short stay guests given excellent location and reasonable price.
