While Namur is the administrative capital of the predominantly French region, with a metropolitan population of over half a million, Charleroi is Wallonia’s pulse point. A busy commercial city, Charleroi oozes youthful exuberance and has the café culture, restaurants and nightlife to show for it. The city’s flagship belfry is part of a vast UNESCO World Heritage Site that includes parts of both Belgium and France. The elegant tower soars over Charleroi’s pre-eminent nexus, the Place Charles II. A fine confluence and heart of the original city, the place, or square, transforms into a vibrant marketplace on Sundays. Other important points of interest to discover in Charleroi include the Palais des Beaux-Arts (Fine Arts Museum), Musée Jules Destrée, which commemorates the 19th century founder of the Walloon Movement, and the Musée Archéologique. All in all, this small, energetic city makes a fine day or weekend trip from France or other destinations within Belgium.
