I returned last night from a week long stay at your Grand Marien resort in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. My new husband and I were looking forward to our first beach vacation together and I must say I could not possibly have been more disappointed. We checked in on Sunday November 20, 2011 and were assigned to room 9117 in Building nine on the ocean front portion of the property. We immediately moved from 9117 to 9118 where we had a king sized bed. We quickly changed and went out to explore the property. Upon our return to our room around 8pm we were greeted with the overwhelming stench of mold. We tried to air the room by opeing the sliding door however the room became too innundated by mosquitoes to continue this method of refreshing the air for long. We raised the air conditioning and waited. By 1am I was coughing and having a hard time breathing from the mold smell. I called the front desk and requested to be moved to another fresher room since I was becoming ill as I am an asthmatic and quite allergic to mold. I was shown a succession of alternative rooms both in the same building as well as in other buildings on the property. I must have visited 8 additional rooms and each was the same. Some with visible signs of mold on the ceiling in the vestibule nearest the door or on the walls of the sleeping area or the lampshades in more than one room mold was apparrent in all three areas mentioned here. The moldy smell was overwhelming in all so I stayed where we were. I was uncomfortable when in my room for any length of time and my breathing became easier only when I was out in the fresh air and not confined to the hotel room. My husband suffered headaches each day when he woke up which similar to me only abated when he was outside the room and not confined to the hotel room where he was also suseptible to the mold. On Wednesday evening we returned from dinner to a flood in our room from the ceiling where it was apparrent there had been prior leaks and paint was applied previously to cover the black mold spores growing there. The leak made this all quite visible. We were again moved to another room in the same Building #9 room 9107. The room was still not fresh but had likely been freshly painted. We remained here for the remainder of our stay. My husbads morning headaches, which are very odd for him and my labored breathing and interrupted sleep was consistent throughtout the duration of our stay. The only relief was gained when we were not confined to the room to breath in the mold. Your hotel is in considerable disrepair Buildings 8 & 9 specifically are in dire need of significant renovation. Your 4 star rating is a complete overstatement of what to expect on your property. Your staff, Fausto at the front desk in particular tried very hard to solve our problem and accomplish out request for a clean and fresh room in which to stay. The alternative however made this task impossible despite his valiant, apologetic and consistent effort. The balance of your staff was similarly healpful. friendly and accommodatimg however our stay was again a tremendous dissappointment. I fully intend to request to website where I booked my trip to your resort lower their 4 star ratimg rating of your property to something more realistic such as two star. Visitors are entitled to know what to expect at your hotel where they would be endangering their health as mold is a hazard to all humans. A hotel of similar condition in the United States would likely be condemned with restricted access unless conditions were corrected to acceptable quality.

This was our second time staying at the Grand Marien Hotel, and we enjoyed our stay. The room could have been just a little cleaner, and you don't get towels in your room until late in the afternoon, but other than that, it was very nice. The food was just average this time, but was plentiful and we found something to eat even with our picky tastes. We would recommend this hotel.
