BEST WESTERN Lord Haldon Country Hotel Exeter
3 out of 5

I have stayed at this hotel before and the last time I stayed was in a newly re furbished room, this was excellent, really roomy and a real treat to stay in. My room this time was less so. The room itself was HUGE!!! loads of space even with a double and single bed in the room, the only issue was that it looked really old and dated. Don't get me wrong this hotel is not a new shiny, glass and chrome corporate chain and needs to stay looking a bit old and charming. It just needs a bit of updating. The food was great, I ate in the bar, Free wifi and loads of parking. Would gladly recomend just be sure to ask for the refurbed rooms.

I took advantage of the low rates through Hotel club, and was impressed particularly with the service. Internet was free, although wireless could be weak signal. Reasonable size room, very flexible with meals, and bar opening. No complaints, and great location for outlook, view etc. A bit of a winding road back to Exeter, but it really is not far. Car park large and free. A great deal.

We only stayed for one night, but found all the staff we encountered to be friendly and exceptionally helpful. The hotel is in a rural location and set in beautiful grounds, which is great for a quiet break. We arrived quite late in the evening, but the chef willingly stayed on to cook us a meal, which was excellent. The room was warm and the bed comfortable, although the decor was showing some early signs of looking tired. This was not out of place in such a beautiful old building. We would have no hesitation returning to this hotel.

Wonderful old building out in beautiful contryside but bedroom in need of decorating. It had a lovely thick divan bed, lots of coffee/tea/milk & chocolate drinks and lovely biscuits which is unusual these days. One well-known chain only gives one packet (with 2 biscuits) perroom, but sadly the bathroom/toilet had thick carpet and one wonders how many times it had been soaked enabling germs to breed especially as shower over bath leaked through screen so if around toilet had been wet what could have been lurking in carpet!?

Be sure to approach the hotel through Ide village. If you follow sat nav and come the shortest route from the A30, as I did, there are about 3 miles of extremely narrow lanes with few passing places. Fortunately as I arrived after 8pm I didn't meet any other traffic or a herd of cows as happened to another guest as reported by the receptionist. Please can the best approach route be advised when booking at this hotel.

I thought the rooms were a bit dated but very clean and comfortable. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The breakfast was one of the best I have had at a hotel/B&B. All local produce was used and you could tell the difference. The location is out of the way with beautiful views and that is what I wanted - still only about 20 mins drive to Exeter City Centre.
