Sydney Wildlife World
When it opened in 2006, Sydney Wildlife World became the latest in the long line of world-class attractions which make Sydney’s Darling Harbour one of the most visited places in the world. ... Read more »
Those intrigued with the idea of nine distinct ecosystems concentrated within a few feet of the Harbour waters will be in for a treat once they step into Wildlife World.
Sydney Wildlife World Exhibits
The dazzling inhabitants of Wildlife World’s Butterfly House and Aviary will be darting around their visitors, when they are not resting the natural canopies above. They are joined by specimens from Australia’s native flora and over a hundred species of fauna, ranging from rainforest inhabitants to those tough enough to have mastered life in the country’s burning “Red Centre.”
No Australian wildlife exhibits worth its gum nuts would be without koalas, wallabies, echidnas, hairy-nosed wombats, and that rarest of avians, the magnificent cassowary; Wildlife World does not disappoint. For those who prefer their wild species to look ferocious instead of cuddly, the thorny devil in the Scales and Tails Exhibit resembles a cross between a banana and a wad of razor wire.
In spite of its vicious appearance, the thorny devil is not even close to being the most dangerous inhabitant of Wildlife World. That honor would probably have to be shared among the Spineless Wonders crowd--in ascending order of frightening names, the brown snake, the taipan, the fierce snake, and the death adder. The funnelweb spider also merits a mention.
The Wildlife World management, perhaps to encourage its patrons to brave their way past the creepy crawlies, has saved the showstopper for the finale. Gumtree Gully is where the koalas are, usually sleeping quietly in the trees.
