Paddington Markets
Sydney’s Oxford Street began its existence in 1811, as a road along the top of a ridgeline following an ancient Aboriginal hunting trail three kilometers east of what is now Sydney’s Central Business District. Because one of the area farmers, John Palmer, did not want people using the road to have access to his property, it was constructed in a less- than-straight line to South Head. ... Read more »
Oxford Street and Paddington
The roundabout nature of Oxford Street may offer an explanation for the puzzling layout of the suburb of Paddington, which grew up on--or, more accurately, down from-- the northern slope of the Oxford Street ridge. Paddington is a picturesque, but bewildering, warren of bougainvillea-brightened lanes wandering among row upon row of Victorian terrace houses.
Those Victorian houses had fallen on hard times following World War II, but beginning in the 1960’s their unplanned gentrification occurred at the hands of immigrants from Mediterranean climes. Paddington is now one of the most sought-after addresses among Sydney’s artistic set, who since 1973 have showcased their work at 395 Oxford Street, every Saturday from 9:00 to 4:00, in the open air Paddington Markets.
The Paddington Markets Experience
Sydneysiders come from far and wide to mingle and shop among the more than two hundred vendors’ stalls on the grounds of the Paddington Uniting Church, which, for the duration of the Markets every Saturday. seems to be uniting them in an effort to outdo one another in the artistry of their wares.
Cutting edge fashions and jewellry, pottery, home-grown-and-preserved foods, glassware and ceramics, paintings and frames, wood carvings and handmade surfboards, and, of course, fresh flower vendors, live entertainment, and lots of inexpensive but delicious grab-and-go Asian cuisine saturate the shoppers’ senses with sound, scent, and colour.
