Chinatown

The sights, sounds and sprit of China come alive in Sydney’s famous Chinatown district. Located in the Southern part of Sydney’s central business district, Chinatown can be found between Central Station and Darling Harbour. Although Chinatown has become more and more like Sydney’s pristine and fashionable downtown, it is by no means unauthentic, as bilingual signs line its streets, where the aroma of Peking duck billows from its restaurants, transporting visitors to another time and place. Often visitors stop by The Dixon House Food Court in Chinatown, enticed by the delicious smells and sizzling sounds that come rising from the fire-hot clay pots. ... Read more »

Chinatown Top 3

  • Stroll through the immaculate grounds of the Chinese Garden of Friendship in Sydney’s Chinatown. Here visitors can wander among the waterfalls, ornate dragon statues and hidden pathways, as if time traveling to the gardens of the Ming Dynasty.
  • Head to Market City for the best produce in Sydney or for a delicious lunch at the massive China Grand Restaurant, one of the most popular Yum Cha restaurants in the area.
  • Visit Paddy’s Market on Sundays for the weekly flea market, where just about everything imaginable can be bought or sold.

Getting There

The exciting streets of Chinatown can be reached by both light rail and monorail. Chinatown streets can be congested, so it is best to avoid traveling by car. As an alternative, use monorail, which has a stop right in front of Chinatown. The streets of Sydney’s Chinatown are best explored by foot or bicycle, as they are often closed to traffic, making it perfect for pedestrians and bicyclists. If visitors wish to travel to Chinatown directly from the airport, they can take Sydney’s Airport Link, which will take them to Sydney’s City Circle, where they can board a train to Chinatown.
