Swanky Swansea

Swansea didn’t seem too shocked when the rich businessmen all got together and decided to make it the next gourmet Swankville of Australia. The rest of Australia, however, is still in recovery… ... Read more »

Now, you may find it hard to believe that we’re encouraging you to visit Tasmania, but Swansea is quaint, modern and elegant. So forget what you’ve heard about hill-dwellers and extra-close families, because Tassie is in the midst of a cultural revolution – and Swansea is leading the charge. Check out Burry Inlet for stunning views, as well as Southern Islandand Moulting Lagoon. There are great opportunities for fishing, exploring and, most importantly, eating out in some of the great new restaurants that seem to pop up right before your eyes. Get with the program, people – Swansea is where it’s at!

SWANSEA’S TOP 10

10. Nine Mile Beach If you’re planning to walk the length of it, you may want to pack a big lunch!

5. Freycinet National Park A great place to explore the natural habitat.

9. Swansea Bark Mill Here you’ll find working models of black-wattle bark processing equipment used to tan leather.

4. Anglican Church Quaint and Englishy – much like Tasmania in general.

8. Council Chambers Once a council chambers, always a council chambers. If these walls could talk!

3. Morris’ General Store This renowned local landmark is one of the many still-functioning historic buildings.

7. Schouten Beach A great central spot to start off and handy for hiring a bike for cruising around.

2. Great Oyster Bay Famous for a reason, you could waste hours just looking at the views.

6. Spiky Bridge Built by convicts in the 1840s, the concept behind this odd design has been completely lost over the years.

1. Heritage Centre/The Glamorgan War Memorial Museum Back in the 1860s, this was a school. It now houses historical exhibits and a sweet old billiard table.

SWANSEA EVENTS

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are big Tassie celebrations that see fireworks by night and picnics by day.

There is quite a large LGBT community in Swansea, so Sydney’s Mardi Gras is screened on TV and parties are thrown during March or April as the Tasmanians celebrate with their Sydney bros and hoes.

August brings Winter’s Longest Lunch. All you have to bring is your appetite!

The Bicheno Food and Wine Festival rolls into town in November. This showcase of local produce is said to be the best food and wine festival in the state.

WHEN TO GO

  • Summer temperatures average around 21°C (70°F), so it’s quite cool compared to the rest of the country.
  • The winter maximum is just 12°C (54°F) and the coldest months are also the wettest.
  • Spring tends to be the windiest time of year.

GETTING AROUND

  • Like many places in our great land, Swansea is quite big and fairly spread out. You should probably look into hiring a car to get around.
  • Once in the main part of town, the beaches and some attractions are easily explored by foot. There are also some nice walks to take advantage of.
  • Bicycles are popular and a great way to discover a lot in little time.
