St Paul’s foundation stone was set in 1880 on the site where the first public Christian service took place in Melbourne five decades earlier. Although officially consecrated in 1891, construction on the cathedral’s distinctive spires did not begin for another thirty-five years. Various restoration works over time, most notably in 1990 on the original grand organ built by T.C. Lewis, have revived St Paul’s austere elegance. The Anglican cathedral is one of the few outside of England to hold a Choral Evensong on Sundays and throughout the week.
