Shrine of Remembrance

The Shrine of Remembrance is a memorial in Melbourne that was originally designed to honour the men and women from Victoria, Australia, who died during World War I, but has evolved into a monument recognizing all Australians who have served in war. The monument was designed by Phillip Hudson and James Wardrop, two famous architects who also served in World War I. The Shrine of Remembrance was built from granite and based on the design of the Parthenon in Athens. The stunning neo-classical structure is the location of several important ceremonies and one of the largest war memorials in Australia. ... Read more »

Shrine of Remembrance Top 3

  • Come to Melbourne on November 11 (Remembrance Day) at 11 am, when a ray of light shines through a small aperture in the roof of the Shrine of Remembrance to illuminate the word “Love.”
  • Take a tour of the crypt beneath the sanctuary of the Shrine of Remembrance to see panels that list every unit of the Australian Imperial Force, a must-see for war historians who visit Melbourne.
  • Stroll the reverent grounds of the Remembrance Garden, pool, waterfall, and a granite wall that lists the conflicts that Australia was involved.

Getting There

Melbourne features great public transportation so it is easy to reach the Shrine of Remembrance from just about anywhere in the city. The shrine is just over a kilometre from the Flinders Street railway station, so most people disembark there and make the pleasant ten-minute walk to the shrine. You can also take just about any tram on St. Kilda Road that is heading south and get off at the entrance to the shrine. There is ample parking on the streets but this fills up quickly on ceremonial days, so it is best to use public transport to avoid hassles.
