Melbourne Hotels near Fitzroy Gardens

The Victorian Heritage Register considers Fitzroy Gardens as the flagship in a notable Melbourne ensemble that includes Alexandra, Carlton, Flagstaff Gardens and the Kings Domain. Eminent naturalist and explorer Clement Hodgkinson, whose imprint is all over Melbourne, undertook the development of Fitzroy in the mid-19th century. Hodgkinson’s original vision of a sprawling recreation space and green sanctuary for the city’s residents is a landscaped oasis of fountains, sculptures and English and native trees. Cooks’ Cottage and the Conservatory are two of the most popular attractions within Fitzroy Gardens.

Vitals and Tips

While it remains uncertain whether Captain James Cook spent any considerable amount of time in what is now Cooks’ Cottage, his parents did build the house in 1755 in a village in North Yorkshire, England. The cottage was bought in 1933, painstakingly dismantled and rebuilt brick by brick a year later in Fitzroy Gardens to commemorate the centenary anniversary of the settlement of Melbourne.

Sir Charles Augustus Fitzroy was Governor of New South Wales (1846-1851) and Governor-General of the Australian Colonies (1851-1855).
