  • Margaret River enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with warm conditions throughout the year and moderate to heavy rain between May and September.

    A small domestic airport that only operates by private charter from Perth’s Jandakot Airport serves Margaret River. Bus services operate daily from the Mounts Bay Bus Terminal, or if you’d prefer, there are a number of tour companies who offer packages. Rental cars are available from the airport, and can be a convenient option. Public transport is limited in the Margaret River wine region, though tailored tours are available by taxi at reasonable rates. During the summer school holidays, a bus runs between Margaret River and the beach several times a day. There are many private companies offering full and half day winery tours to make for a fun, interesting and informative day out.

    Margaret River Climate

    The climate in Margaret River is best describes as humid Mediterranean. The rainy season is between May and August. The best time of year to visit is during the summer, when the weather is warm but the sea breezes are blowing. Be careful of bush fires during the hottest days of summer in December and January.

    Getting There & Around

    Travellers can reach Margaret River by flying into Perth Airport and then driving about three hours along Roe Highway. Another driving option from Perth is the South Western Highway, which is a scenic inland route. Small charter flights are available from Perth to airstrips near Margaret River. There is also a daily bus available from Southwest Coach Lines that travels from Perth to Margaret River.

    There are several other options to get around Margaret River, including taxi services, bus lines and car rentals. During the summer holidays, it is possible to visit the beaches taking the Beach Bus. There are also bus runs from the town centre to Surfers Point.

    When To Go

    The Margaret River wine region enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, with summer highs of around 30°C (86°F) tending to an average of around 25°C (77°F) for most of January and February. Winter temperatures peak at around 18°C (64°F) but can get as low as 8°C (46°F) on the coldest days. The first few months of the year are kindest in terms of rainfall in Margaret River, with around 50 mm (2 inches) in summer. March is a great time to visit for the annual Margaret River Wine Region Festival, but the conditions are also ideal for the many local surf breaks, so wax your board and prime your taste buds for a refreshing, rejuvenating holiday.

    • Temperatures average 25°C (77°F) in summer, and around 15°C (59°F) in winter

    • Rainfall can be high in winter, but averages around 50 mm (2 inches) in summer.

    • March is the best time for surfing in Margaret River.
