Kings Canyon General Information

Watarrka National Park is one of the most popular points of interest in the arid “Red Centre” of Australia. The 720 km2 expanse of Northern Territory is about 450 km southwest of Alice Springs and 315 km north of UNESCO World Heritage Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. As a short tour or holiday trip in combination with Uluru (Ayers Rock), West MacDonnell National Park and Finke Gorge National Park, Wattarka National Park is supreme. ... Read more »

Of course, few people refer to Wattarka National Park as such. As the indelible topographical poster child for the glorious swath of Northern Territory wilderness, Kings Canyon is what the vast majority of visitors come to see. Consequently, the name “Wattarka” rarely figures into the equation. Kings Canyon however, rightly draws the awestruck gaze of countless domestic and international thrill-seekers. The spectacular, otherworldly and eminently photogenic gorge system sits on the western end of the George Gill Range. Several walks, some more adventurous and rigorous than others, offer magnificent views of the Kings Canyon landscape. The Giles Track is a tough but worthwhile 22 km walk that traverses the top of the George Gill Range from Kathleen Springs to Kings Canyon. At the other end of the spectrum, the Kathleen Springs walk is a manageable, yet gorgeously scenic, 2.6 km route suitable for families with kids in tow.
