Seal Bay

Seal Bay is a wildlife conservation area on Kangaroo Island, lying just off the coast of South Australia. Somewhat inaptly named, it is actually the base for a colony of sea lions, not seals (coming here will no doubt educate you on the difference). You can get up close to this wild colony, with access to the beach within a few metres of these beautiful creatures. Keep an eye on the bull sea lions during the mating season, as they have been known to rush tourists who get too close. Seal Bay is an easy 45-minute drive from the main town of Kingscote. ... Seal Bay Top 3

  • Take the guided tour of Seal Bay with a National Parks and Wildlife Officer, who will tell you all about the sea lions behaviour where you can get close for some great photos.
  • Visit Flinders Chase National Park on the southern coast of Kangaroo Island for stunning views of the amazing rock formations at Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch.
  • Drive the Farm Gate and Cellar Door Trail and sample the locally produced food and wine that have given Kangaroo Island a sterling reputation.

Getting There

Kangaroo Island has very limited public and private transport, and the best way to get around is by motor vehicle. Many people bring their cars across to the island on the ferry that runs regularly from the mainland at Cape Jervis to Penneshaw. There are flights several times a day from Adelaide Airport to Kingscote Airport on the island (a half-hour flight), and you can hire cars at the airport. Roads are generally good to most attractions on the island, including Seal Bay. Cycling throughout the island is recommended for interacting with the environment, but certain areas are preserved.
