10. Bowali Visitor Centre Drop in before your expedition and you will find a wealth of information on both the local ecology and Aboriginal culture.	5. Shady Camp Jump on a tour and be on the lookout for the biggest croc in the whole park – a whopping 6m in length!
9. Koolpin Gorge Pick up a permit and go for a 4WD adventure along the white sand past seemingly endless gorges.	4. Gubara Meander through the butterflies that surround the pools scattered along this walk.
8. Mirrai Lookout Walk The steep climb is a bit of an effort, but you will be rewarded with a cracker of a view over the escarpment.	3. Gunlom Plunge Pool Soak away the inevitable sweat you have accumulated trekking around in this serene crystal-clear pool.

6. Yurmikmik Walks This is actually a series of interconnected walking tracks, but you will come across some lovely swimming holes along the way.	1. Nourlangie Rock The walls of this site have served as both shelter and canvas from way before the tall ships.

KAKADU EVENTS

Make sure your esky is chock-full for an Australia Day in the heart of Oz in January.

Bring your sturdiest rod for the Aurora Kakadu Klash fishing comp each March.

During the Queen’s birthday long weekend in June, give the old girl a proper celebration at the Top End Folk Festival.

Celebrate the seasonal winds with a dance, a drink and an explosion of fireworks at the Jabiru Mahbilil Festival each September.

WHEN TO GO

· Kakadu has a far more tropical climate than the rest of the country, observing more of a wet and dry season model (some suggest it has up to six seasons a year, with very distinct conditions).

· June and August are the coolest and driest months, but also among the busiest due to the school holidays.

· If you’re on the lookout for some wildlife, the late dry season in September and October is fantastic.

GETTING AROUND

· The tourist route through Kakadu is top-notch, and perfect if you are looking to drive yourself into the wilderness.

· There are also plenty of tours available, from small 4WD groups, to larger guided tours.

· To get the real picture of Kakadu in all her glory, take to the skies with a scenic flight over the breathtaking terrain.
