Popular Destinations near Hervey Bay
Favourite Cities and Hotels in Australia

Blissful Hervey Bay is a popular resort city on the east coast of Australia. The Queensland city of 52,000 people is less than 300 km from Brisbane and draws scores of tourists from the state capital. The inherent allure has a lot to do with location. The city of Hervey Bay sits on the coast of a natural bay between the mainland and Fraser Island. A mild subtropical climate helps ensure relatively favorable weather throughout most of the year. Throw in the splendor of the Sunshine Coast and the grand spectacle of humpback whale migrations and you have one terrific destination.

UNESCO World Heritage Fraser Island is the star attraction of Hervey Bay. The sand island is 122 km long, a notable world record. Rare freshwater dune lakes and traces of tropical rainforest dot the island from end to end and help make Fraser truly incomparable. Lady Elliot Island, a coral cay of the Great Barrier Reef, is another gem in the area.

    Happening Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay has been called the whale-watching capital of the world, but before you start planning your big Free Willy sequel in your mind, remember that it is the much larger humpback whales (as opposed to killer whales) that frequent the waters around Hervey Bay.

Urangan Boat Harbour is not only the launching pad for whale watching, but also to Fraser Island. The island is popular with four-wheel-drivers wanting to test their sand-driving skills, and also protects Hervey Bay – making it a great place to swim or fish. Speaking of driving, the town also has a Go-Kart Track, so while you won’t be able to re-create Free Willy, remaking Days of Thunder (or possibly Talladega Nights) is well within your reach! With its white sands, friendly, laid-back locals and stunning Fraser Island on the doorstep, Hervey Bay is a holiday dream come true.

    HERVEY BAY’S TOP 10

    10. Urangan Jetty Keep walking. Keep walking. Oh look, some fish. Keep walking. Keep walking. (It’s pretty long.) 5. The Esplanade With walking paths, bicycle paths and picnic areas, there are many ways to take in the view.
    9. Burrum District Museum Explore the history of mining in the region. 4. Coral Viewing Boat Tour If you don’t like getting wet, viewing the coral from this glass-bottom boat is the next best thing.
    8. Lady Elliot Island Popular with sea turtles and divers alike. 3. Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum Go back in time and get a demonstration on being a blacksmith.
    7. Wetside Water Education Park With water slides and wave machines, this is another way to experience water. 2. Fraser Island The largest sand island in the world also boasts rainforests and a large dingo population. (They’re thought to be the ‘purest’ dingoes in the country.)
    6. Scrub Hill Community Farm Run by a local Aboriginal community, you can get great organic veg and a real didgeridoo. 1. Whale Watching Come see the imposing beasts from late-July to early November.

    HERVEY BAY EVENTS

The Hervey Bay Triathlon and Multisports Festival in May sees first-timers and Olympians compete side by side. Well, you’ll be side by side at the start anyway…

In August, the Hervey Bay Whale Festival celebrates the return of the huge humpback whales to the region.

Also in August, the Hervey Bay Seafood Festival will make sure you don’t go hungry.

August is clearly the time to visit, as there is also the Oceans of Fun Festival for little kids and kids at heart.

Unleash your inner artist at McGregor on the Bay. Art classes are held at the University of Southern Queensland’s coastal campus in September.
