Kuranda

Kuranda is a town surrounded by rainforest that is located about 25 kilometres from Cairns, Australia on the Atherton Tableland. For more than 10,000 years the area was home to the Aboriginal Djabugay people before European settlers massacred them in the 19th century. The timber industry in Kuranda boomed after a railway was built that connected the town to Cairns. In the 1960’s the town became known for its collection of hippies and people with alternative lifestyles and this Bohemian feel still exists in the town today. People come from all over the region to explore the area’s natural beauty. ... Read more »

Getting There

One of the main attractions in Kuranda is the scenic railway that connects it to Cairns. Most people either arrive by this method, the skyrail gondola cableway, or along the Kuranda Range road. These are the best ways to get to the area from Cairns, as they will allow you to enjoy the verdant natural beauty and rainforests that surround the area. You can also hire cars in Cairns, which will provide a little more freedom to explore things that are off the beaten path. Once at their destination many people take guided treks into the rainforest.
