Adelaide Central Market
“Terroire.” While it sounds frightening, it’s really a French term referring to the characteristics which a food inherits from the region where it was produced. “Terroire” explains why grapes grown on one side of a valley will produce a wine markedly different from grapes of the same strain grown on the other side. ... Do the foods of the Adelaide region have their own terroire? Visitors from all over the world, as well as Australian restaurant chefs, food critics, and television cooking show celebrities seem to think so. They have made the Adelaide Central Market and its surrounding arcade, situated between Grote and Gouger Streets, Adelaide’s top tourist attraction.
From its 1869 beginnings, when to the accompaniment of tunes from the Concordia Band, a group of Adelaide’s market gardeners drove eight carts of produce to a fenced lot on Grote Street, the Adelaide Central Market has grown to be the largest fresh-produce market in the Southern Hemisphere, alive with aromas, colours, and vendors hawking their wares to throngs of people in search of sustenance. Bargaining is acceptable.
The Adelaide Central Market’s Offerings
The Market showcases regional products--both plant and animal--many of which were grown less than an hour’s drive way. They include greenhouse vegetables from the Virginia district, orchard fruits from Adelaide Hills, Riverlands citrus, and Fleurieu Peninsula olive oil and meats. The Market has also expanded to include a section of produce from other areas of Southeast Asia, as well as cheeses, seafood, baked goods, coffee and teas, and flowers of every imaginable variety.
Visitors to the Adelaide Central Market can also find meal service; Lucia’s and the Big Table are local legends, and numerous stalls offer Southeastern Asian dishes. Tourists often just relax over coffee and pastry or cake at one of the many café tables, and enjoy the market’s ebb and flow. Others bring along a picnic hamper, fill it with freshly prepared goodies, and head off for an adventure in Adelaide’s surrounds.
The Adelaide Central Market is open Tuesday 7.00am - 5.30pm, Thursday 11.00am - 5.30pm, Friday 7.00am - 9.00pm, and Saturday 7.00am - 3.00pm. Admission is free.
